The Entrepreneur Business Basics Spring 2022 class just graduated, and we recently talked with one of the graduates, Gail Wege, founder of Route Step Farm Coffee Barn. Her business provides sustainably sourced food and locally roasted coffee to the rural community of Onaga, Kansas. Open for under a year, Gail’s veteran-owned and woman-owned business is creating a new hangout for her town and the surrounding area, with plans and opportunities for growth and additional product distribution.
Tell us about you, your business name, and what your business offers?
Gail L. Wege, owner of Route Step Farm Coffee Barn.
I’m Gail L. Wege, the owner/operator of Route Step Farm Coffee Barn. We call it the Coffee Barn, for short. We offer air roasted coffee and espresso drinks along with plant based energy drinks. We also offer artisan hand-crafted goat milk soaps and lotions as well as sugar and grub scrubs.
During the week we serve lunch on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, along with the best cinnamon rolls around! The “barn” side provides livestock feeds for a variety of animals including cattle, goats, sheep, poultry, dogs and cats. Additionally, we also offer local raw honey along with apiary supplies and assistance.
What’s something unique about Route Step Farm Coffee Barn?
Our brick and mortar building was built in the early 1880s and is located on main street in Onaga, Kansas. We are a third-generation workforce with my mom as the chef, my husband and son run the apiary portion, and my sister and her family raise grass fed, grain finished beef.
