Candlemaker’s Love of Creating ‘Pleasant Environments’ Helps Her Expand From Farmer’s Market to Grocery Retail

Two people stand behind a candle display at an outdoor market. The adult on the left wears a white shirt with text, and the child on the right wears a black shirt with text. The wooden shelves hold various candles in jars. Cars and tents are visible in the background.

Just over 20 years ago, Kamala “Khae” Collins discovered her unique path to entrepreneurship as she looked for ways to “make people feel good” beyond her work as a nurse. She discovered her love of long-lasting candles was an experience many of her friends and family shared with her, and a business was born: Pampered Senses Candles.

With over two decades of entrepreneurship experience, Khae has been able to develop multiple avenues for reaching new customers, including a Farmer’s Market stand, e-commerce purchasing on her website, and in the last year, her products were added to shelves at Hy-Vee in Manhattan. A member of the Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills, Khae has a number of supportive connections in the community that have helped her get established and grow. Khae also involves her son in her business, and he can often be found at some of her vendor set-ups at the Farmer’s Market.

As part of our #ShopSmall series in December, get to know this small business owner, Khae, how she got started in her business and some of her current opportunities for growth, as well as her own advice to other entrepreneurs who are starting out.

Tell us your entrepreneur back story – how did you get into your current business or what motivated you to start your business?

I started my business in 2001 as a spin off to my Nursing career. I wanted to be able to replicate making people feel good and come together outside of working as a nurse. I noticed candles I purchased did not last long so I set off to create something that lasts and filled the space with a pleasant aroma. As I begin to create a product and offer it to the community, people begin to remember me and tell me stories about why they had enjoyed my candles. It was then that I knew I could provide a product helping others create a pleasant, long-lasting space.

What products or services does your business provide?

My business provides fragranced home décor in the form of candles and wax melts.  It has been found that there is a connection between odors and powerful memories. Through the fragrances I offer, I can help facilitate that experience for my customers and bring people together.

What is unique about your products compared to others who provide similar products?

I offer products that are true to scent name. They are whimsical, fun and match any lifestyle décor. I am also able to [meet my customers and help personalize orders] in a way that larger companies cannot. This makes their purchasing experience more one on one.

What is a way that the Greater Manhattan community has helped you develop your business?

Kamala “Khae” Collins, owner of Pampered Senses Candles

The community of Manhattan, Kansas has helped me develop my business by providing support through word of mouth and networking. During the pandemic I saw a boost in business at the Downtown Manhattan Farmer’s Market. Customers were able to trust me with still meeting their demands when big retailers were closed. This same support allowed me to have repeat customers and expand to offer products in our local Hy-Vee.

What advice would you give to fellow business owners?  The advice I would give to others would be to research what it is you want to offer. Strive to offer your own spin on service. If there is another business offering the same products, try to offer something unique that sets your service apart. Also learn what your customers’ needs are when they look to purchase a service.
