Downtown Jewelry Business Marks Half a Century in Business

A woman in a green dress stands smiling with one hand on her hip in front of a storefront. Above her, an oval sign reads "Darenberg" in elegant script. The store has large windows and red accents. The street scene includes another store in the background.

Today’s featured business is part of our #StartSmall series, encouraging members of our region to start their holiday shopping with local small business first. Through the month of December, we’ll get to know the faces of small business through conversation with local business owners.

Kate Narrow, owner of Danenberg Jewelers, along with Brian Danenberg, stands in front of their retail space on Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, KS. See more about their business here.

Today we meet Kate from Danenberg Jewelers. Their business on Poyntz is a piece of Manhattan’s history that dates back over half a century. With Christmas just a few days away, we are thankful that she was able to take a few minutes out of her day to tell us about her experience being a small business owner in Manhattan.

What’s your business backstory?

Brian Danenberg (my brother) and Kate (Danenberg) Narrow (me) are third generation owners of Danenberg Jewelers. Our Grandpa, Fred Danenberg, opened the store in 1966 and our dad, Mike Danenberg, bought the store from him in 1985. We were privileged to have the opportunity to purchase the business from him and have owned it since 2017.

What do you love about owning a business in Manhattan?

We are incredibly proud and honored to carry on the tradition of serving the jewelry needs of Manhattanites and the surrounding communities. For the last 54 years we’ve been located in the heart of downtown MHK, a neighborhood that continues to evolve and provide a wonderfully unique selection of shops, services, and restaurants for our many visitors, as well as locals!

What makes your business unique?

What makes our business unique is the level of knowledge and experience of our staff. Hard to imagine, but our crew has over 150 years of experience in THIS store. We do our very best to make sure we exceed our customers’ expectations on quality, value, and customer service. What really sets us apart is our master bench jeweler, Keith Stewart. He specializes in handmade, expertly crafted custom jewelry, all done in house. Several of his pieces are award winning, all of them are one of a kind!

What experience do you want people to have in your shop?

When people visit our store we want them to feel comfortable and truly cared for. Many of our customers have loyally come to us for all their jewelry needs for years and become our closest friends and family. We are striving to maintain the level of excellence and service they’ve come to expect and continue to earn their trust and business. We are in it for the long haul…and couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity.

If you’re still looking for that perfect gift for your special someone, look no further than Danenberg Jewelers. It may be the last minute, but our small businesses are up for the challenge. Shop local this holiday season and support your community.
